evil in the parking lot and evil was not going to leave. captioning sponsored by cbs this is the "cbs evening news" with scott pelley. >> pelley: good evening. general john allen, the general in charge of the war in afghanistan, is under investigation tonight in connection with the same woman who helped bring down the director of the c.i.a., retired general david petraeus. now general allen's nomination to be supreme allied commander of nato is on hold. two of the top military men of their generation have been brought low by their acquaintance with jill kelley, a tampa socialite seen here at her home with the story playing on the t.v. behind her. last spring, kelley complained to the f.b.i. of receiving harassing anonymous e-mails. turned out, those e-mails had been written by a jealous paula broadwell. the investigation then exposed broadwell's affair with c.i.a. director david petraeus. then the f.b.i. found an e-mail trail linking kelley to general allen. and tonight bob orr picks up the story for us from there. bob? >> reporter: good evening, scott, well, the announcement came in
explaining that before mr. romney even lost. october 31st, campaign sources told cbs news super storm sandy stalled romney's momentum. a few days before the election, if you hadn't had the storm, there would have been more of a chance for the romney campaign to talk about the deficit. the blame the storm line has continued all through today especially with former mississippi governor haley barbour speaking on the "today" show. >> hurricane sandy saved barack obama's presidency. it broke the momentum romney had coming in the end of october. >> this is a narrative republicans are telling themselves, that the beltway media is also now starting to tell itself because they keep hearing republicans say it. it is not a theory born from reality. this is a checkable thing, emperical idea. their theory is mitt romney was on track to win this thing if it weren't for that blasted storm. this is something we can check. easy. let's start with this. we're all in agreement that the polls were correct despite all the nonsense ahead of the election how the polls seemed so wrong before the election, now that
enough, like he does. he went on cbs today and called her not very bright, which you will recall is the exact same thing that john sununu said about president obama and his role in the mitt romney campaign. he called him not very bright. the president's response to john mccain's attempted destruction of susan rice and his pledge to block her nomination, and mccain's pledge to block her nomination as secretary of state, the president's response to that has not been to say, i don't want to talk about benghazi, nothing to see here, his reaction has been to say, yes, we should talk about what happened in libya. but the idea that susan rice is going to be your scapegoat here when she has done nothing wrong, that's the part that is nonsense and i'm not going to go along with that. and you're not using something made up about her to destroy a career that is still on its way up. picking a fight is what they're calling this in the beltway media, right? picking a fight would be installing paul krugman at treasury. picking a fight would be like picking eliot spitzer for attorney general. pi
